Motion Masters

LOOK09-301014

Garage Magazine continues to push the envelope with content that bridges the gap between high gloss fashion photography and new media. For its latest endeavor photographer Yvan Fabing creates a series of mesmerizing gifs that delight with each and every move. Styled by model cum stylist Tatiana Cotliar the expressive gifs feature a selection of streetwise looks with a touch of humor and give models Alys Hale and Harmony Boucher a chance to express their personality. We caught up with Tati and Yvan to discuss the project and its irreverent take on fashion. / See the full set of gifs on Garage Mag

Do you think moving images are the future of fashion photography?

Tati Cotliar : I definitely think that people nowadays want to reach something more “real”. They want to feel more identified with what they are seeing. So, it’s still the same iconic idea but now it seems easier to achieve if you see it moving, because it makes it closer to a human being. Another thing is that everyone from 10 to 50 years old is obsessed with technology and media. Everything seems more instant and easy and, therefore, faster. There’s a need for stimulation in every sense: movement is faster and makes the people of today react faster. With the possibility of movement in real time, there are more things to play with that can captivate the eye or ear of the person.

Tati – the styling on this is incredible, tell us about some of your favorite pieces you used.

Tati: Thank you! I am quite obsessed at the moment with the different uses of sportswear and how it was taken by fashion and music and street style in different levels. I love the take of some designers like Ashish, where he reformulates the classic sweatshirt and sweatpants with an amazing unexpected 80s bubblegum colour swirl! The Kenzo Coat was also one of my favourites. The idea of putting an ultra “not cool at all” ski fabric into a massive coat and putting it on a runway fascinates me, because it reminds me of early 90s/80s sportswear, when a coat like this would have never been sold in a Parisian ultra-chic shop. Sport was not glamorous, and now it is!

How did you guys go about making these? You don’t have to reveal all your secrets!

Tati: Well, Yvan is a master of light and he has made amazing GIFs for his own portfolio. When we saw that we were able to “move” a piece of clothing on a person, making it more “real”, it was very exciting for us!

What was the mood / attitude you were trying to get across?

In terms of the styling, as I said before, I loved the idea of playing around with sports references, from streetwear as NYC in the 80s, LA Skaters, to Music like Hip Hop and Pop in the 90s. I think that what sportswear brings into the attitude is the idea of feeling tough and arrogant, scaring the opponent (on a sport level) . Also, sportswear is comfortable, so the attitude was always the feeling of freedom and being relaxed with yourself, not uptight in ultra-repressed high heel couture dresses.

Tati – You always have incredible style, but what made you want to get into styling shoots?

Tati: I love characters: I love being able to interpret a different character with the way I dress. I think fashion gives you the chance to be any character you want, because everything seems possible. You are allowed to be who you want to be without attaching yourself to reality. And styling gave me the tools to explore that myself, with my own ideas.
